Prompt: animate a number without moving its units

Use this brief for a number reveal whose unit and surrounding label stay still. Specify whether intermediate numbers are decorative or actual observations.

What to prepare

  • Start and end strings with units
  • Approved decimal and sign conventions
  • Whether values are real observations or an illustrative reveal

Copyable creative brief

An authored planning example. Replace illustrative details with your approved product facts and assets.

Plan a 15-second numeric reveal for LABEL using START_VALUE and END_VALUE with UNIT. Reserve a fixed-width numeric region large enough for the widest signed value. Anchor the decimal point when decimals are present; otherwise use the supplied alignment rule. Place UNIT in its own fixed region with a consistent gap. The label, sign slot and unit must not move when digit widths change.

Declare COUNTER_MEANING on screen or in adjacent explanation. If this is a decorative reveal, do not present intermediate ticks as measurements or a real time series. If observations are supplied, show only those observations with their timestamps and do not invent interpolated readings. Preserve the approved precision and locale formatting.

Inspect zero crossing, a change in digit count and the final value. Keep the unit outside any rolling-digit masks. Settle on the exact END_VALUE and hold the complete label-value-unit group still. If the value cannot fit, propose a new composition rather than silently rounding or abbreviating it. All fictional inputs must carry an illustrative-data label.

Make it your own

START_VALUE and END_VALUE
Provide exact formatted values, including signs and decimal punctuation.
UNIT
Use the approved unit and its spacing convention.
COUNTER_MEANING
Choose decorative endpoint reveal or actual supplied observations.
ALIGNMENT_RULE
Specify decimal, right or other fixed alignment and maximum field width.
LABEL
Supply the exact fixed label that identifies what the value represents, including illustrative status where applicable.

Use a difficult sample

An illustrative temperature study moves from −8.0 to 12.0 °C. Reserve the minus-sign position even after the sign disappears and inspect 9.9 to 10.0 for width changes. Keep “Illustrative transition” visible; these intermediate values are layout tests, not reported temperature measurements.

Adapt the numeric format

A percentage, currency value and count may need different punctuation and precision. Supply the final formatted string rather than asking the animator to infer locale rules. For an integer count, remove the decimal anchor requirement but keep the unit and label positions fixed.

Correct drifting furniture

If the unit jumps, separate it from the changing text field. If a rolling mask clips the decimal mark, isolate only the digits that actually roll. If the endpoint acquires extra decimal places, restore the approved precision. Replace a busy count-up with a direct change when the ticks add no useful information.

Review checklist

  • The widest signed value fits.
  • The unit never rides with changing digit widths.
  • Intermediate values have an honest interpretation.
  • The final string matches the approved source exactly.
