Motion design craft / Storyboard

30-second single data finding storyboard

Explain one finding with enough context to understand what was counted. The worked storyboard uses fictional workshop values; replace them only with checked, consistently defined data.

What to prepare

  • Reader question and approved claim
  • Dataset, units, period and inclusion definition
  • Source record and chart assets

Copyable creative brief

An authored planning example. Replace illustrative details with your approved product facts and assets.

Use one fixed-scale chart to answer one question. Establish scope before the marks, reveal the complete comparison before interpretation and keep the source attached. The example counts completed practice pieces and does not establish quality, speed or causation.

    Ask the question

Show the question above an empty plotting region.

On screen:Which workshop completed the most practice pieces?

  2. 02

    4–9s

    Define the scope

Show three workshop labels and a fixed 0–24 pieces scale.

On screen:Illustrative data • one fictional week • completed pieces

  3. 03

    Reveal the values

Grow North 18, East 12 and West 24 bars from a shared zero baseline; keep labels fixed.

    On screen:North 18 • East 12 • West 24

  4. 04

    18–24s

    Interpret the finding

Highlight West with a keyline while keeping the other bars visible.

On screen:West has the largest count in this example.

    Hold evidence and source

Make it your own

QUESTION
State one answerable comparison question.
VALUES and DEFINITION
Supply matching quantities and what each counts.
SOURCE and SCOPE
Identify provenance, population and period.
INTERPRETATION
Use a conclusion no stronger than the evidence.

Replace the example responsibly

For real data, provide the exact source location and check that all categories use the same period and inclusion rule. Replace the illustrative-data label only when the values are genuinely sourced. If the question concerns efficiency, counts alone are insufficient; request the relevant denominator or change the question.

Adapt the chart without changing meaning

A horizontal arrangement can support longer category names. A dot plot may offer a quieter comparison, but preserve the common scale and direct values. For a 15-second cutdown, reduce the number of categories with an explicit scope change or move to a simpler question; do not omit the definition just to keep all bars.

Review the claim-to-chart connection

Check that the conclusion is visible in the marks and does not add a causal story. Inspect the source note at delivery size and the complete chart on the final hold. If the scale changes during growth, correct it before assessing visual polish. The plan's arithmetic is illustrative; it is not a reported business result.

Review checklist

  • The question is answered by the supplied dataset.
  • All values share units and definitions.
  • The axis remains fixed during reveal.
  • The final source and qualification remain readable.
