Who this is for: Product teams reducing a long recording to one understandable task.
What to prepare
- Complete observed task sequence
- Starting role and setup conditions
- A list of consequential choices
- Final-state evidence
Write a prerequisite card
Describe the starting account, role, available objects and completed setup. Put the necessary context in the video or nearby explanatory copy where the audience will encounter it. A production-only note does not resolve a viewer’s missing context.
For an illustrative fictional asset library, the card reads: “Configured workspace; editor access; sample folder already created; one sample image ready to upload.” This permits the demo to start at file selection without implying that a new account arrives with those conditions.
Create a keep, compress and omit map
The selected task is to place sample-image.png in the Sample campaign folder and verify it is findable. The following cut decisions preserve the task’s causal chain.
- Omit sign-in: access already exists in the prerequisite card. Do not describe the film as a complete first-use tutorial.
- Omit workspace creation: it is outside this task, but provide a separate setup resource when viewers need it.
- Keep folder selection: the destination determines where the file will appear.
- Compress repeated file-picker navigation: show the chosen filename and a clear transition to selection rather than every directory click.
- Keep upload status and confirmation: use actual product states, disclosing any shortened wait.
- Keep destination inspection: the same filename must appear in Sample campaign, not merely in a temporary upload list.
Recognize a consequential omission
A role check, field mapping, confirmation dialog or scope selector may look like boring setup while controlling the entire outcome. If removing it would change what an uninformed viewer believes they must do, retain it or explain the requirement explicitly.
A cut from a local file to a finished library item can falsely suggest automatic organization. Show destination selection before the cut. If the real application chooses the folder through a rule, show or state that configured rule instead.
Read the shortened chain aloud
Describe the final film without relying on the missing footage: “In the configured workspace, select Sample campaign, choose sample-image.png, wait for completion, then inspect the saved item.” If this sentence contains an action absent from the film, decide whether the scene or a label must supply it.
For training, retain more navigation and add a route back to the starting area. For a promotional demo, omit routine navigation while keeping object identity and outcome. Different levels of detail are reasonable when the purpose is explicit.
Review checklist
- Prerequisites are visible to the intended viewer.
- Every omitted step is routine or explicitly accounted for.
- Scope and destination choices remain understandable.
- The ending verifies the same object introduced at the start.
