Show missing data in animated charts

Missing data is a visible part of the explanation. Leave an honest gap when observations are absent; do not turn the gap into zero or animate a connecting segment that implies measured continuity.

What to prepare

  • Timestamped observations and missing-value markers
  • Reason for each gap, if known
  • Approved policy for any estimated values
  • Axis spacing and observation interval

Classify the absence

Use this illustrative series of daily practice pieces: Monday 8, Tuesday 10, Wednesday missing, Thursday missing, Friday 9. “Missing” means no observation was supplied. It does not mean the workshop completed zero pieces, stopped operating or maintained Tuesday’s output.

Build a gap sheet with date, supplied status, reason, display treatment and explanatory note. If the reason is unknown, write “No observation supplied.” Do not invent an outage story. If a day is structurally outside the measurement period, distinguish that from an expected observation that was not collected.

Draw the observed segments

Place all five days on the time axis with consistent spacing. Draw the observed Monday-to-Tuesday segment, stop at Tuesday and show Friday as a separate point. Keep Wednesday and Thursday blank in the plot and add a small label: “Wednesday–Thursday: no observations supplied.”

In the animation, pause briefly at the stopped line before introducing the gap explanation. Then reveal Friday’s point without sweeping a line across the empty interval. Use a final overview long enough to see that Friday exists while the middle remains unknown. Keep the “Illustrative data” label connected to the chart.

Choose a gap treatment intentionally

A break is often the clearest treatment for absent observations. A shaded interval can help when the gap is the lesson’s focus, but it must not cover other marks or look like an uncertainty band. A separate missing-data symbol can work if its legend is legible and consistent.

If a subject expert supplies an estimation method and approved estimated values, label those as estimates and use a visibly different treatment. Do not add a smooth bridge just because it makes the line animation more fluid. A filled estimate is a different information product from an observed record, and its assumptions need space in the explanation.

Test the likely misreading

Ask a reviewer what happened on Wednesday. The intended answer is “the chart does not tell us.” If they say “zero” or “unchanged,” revise the visual treatment. Check that a moving marker never travels through an unobserved position as though it were a measured point.

When adapting to a smaller frame, retain the time labels around the gap even if you simplify decorative grid lines. A crop that removes Wednesday and Thursday can make Monday, Tuesday and Friday appear adjacent. Include the gap policy in the handoff and recheck it after replacing the example with real data. The final chart should make absence as deliberate as presence.

Review checklist

  • Missing values are separate from recorded zeros.
  • No observed line crosses an unobserved interval.
  • Any estimate has a distinct label and supplied method.
  • Time spacing still represents the actual sequence.
