24-second part-to-whole breakdown storyboard

Begin with the whole, explain its parts and return to the whole. Use this plan only when categories can honestly form the stated total.

What to prepare

  • Total and mutually compatible component counts
  • Category definitions and rounding policy
  • Source or illustrative-data status

Copyable creative brief

An authored planning example. Replace illustrative details with your approved product facts and assets.

Use a single composition that preserves the total while revealing components. Do not change the denominator during emphasis or imply that overlapping categories are exclusive. The worked sample is a fictional set of 20 tiles split into 8 blue, 7 striped and 5 plain tiles.

Scene-by-scene storyboard

24-second planning sequence · illustrative copy and visual direction

  1. 01

    0–4s

    Establish the whole

Show 20 tiles in one bounded group with a visible total label.

On screen:Illustrative set: 20 tiles total

  2. 02

    4–10s

    Separate the components

Move the tiles into three nearby labeled groups while retaining the enclosing whole boundary.

    On screen:Blue 8 • Striped 7 • Plain 5

  3. 03

    10–17s

    Explain the shares

Add checked shares beside counts without resizing the total boundary.

    On screen:8/20 = 40% • 7/20 = 35% • 5/20 = 25%

  4. 04

    17–24s

    Recombine and hold

Return groups to one complete composition, preserving category identity and total.

On screen:20 tiles • three parts of the same whole

Make it your own

TOTAL
Define the complete denominator and its scope.
COMPONENTS
Supply named parts whose relationship to the total is checked.
ROUNDING_NOTE
Provide any necessary explanation for displayed percentages.

Check the denominator before drawing

The sample's counts add to 20 and its displayed percentages add to 100%. That arithmetic belongs to the fictional example. For real data, verify that categories share the same period and definition, account for exclusions and state when rounding prevents displayed shares from summing exactly.

Retiming and category adaptation

Twenty-four seconds is a planning duration. For 30 seconds, use 0–5, 5–12, 12–21 and 21–30 seconds. More time belongs to the count/share comparison and final hold. If there are many small categories, use a labeled aggregate only with approved definitions rather than quietly dropping parts.

Inspect separation and reunion

Keep the enclosing whole visible as groups move so the parts do not seem to acquire a new denominator. If a category is represented by pattern, preserve it after recombination. If values overlap or membership is nonexclusive, choose a relationship diagram instead of forcing a misleading composition chart.

Review checklist

  • Components use the same defined whole.
  • Counts and shares are checked.
  • The total remains visible during separation.
  • Patterns or labels preserve identity after recombination.
