Who this is for: Motion designers, content producers and creative reviewers.
What to prepare
- Approved estimate, interval bounds and units
- Exact interpretation supplied by the data owner
- Population, period and method note
- Source and uncertainty wording approved for publication
Ask what the range represents
Do not infer an interval’s meaning from its appearance. A minimum-to-maximum range, a forecast interval and an uncertainty interval around an estimate answer different questions. Ask the data owner for the approved interpretation before writing narration or deciding how the band moves.
For an explicitly fictional planning study, suppose an estimate is 12 days with an illustrative range from 9 to 16 days. The exercise supplies only those values; it does not establish a probability, confidence level or delivery guarantee. Label the sample accordingly and avoid words such as “certain,” “will” or “95%” unless the actual source supports them.
Sketch the complete range before revealing it
Create a horizontal axis labeled “Days,” with fixed positions for 9, 12 and 16. Place a marker at 12 labeled “Illustrative estimate.” Draw a band from 9 to 16 and reserve a text region directly below for the approved meaning. Keep the source note beside that region.
A useful reveal order is scope and units, range and center together, approved explanation, then a complete reference hold. If the center arrives first, make that moment brief and clearly preparatory; do not let a bold “12 days” function as the entire headline while the range waits off-screen.
Control the visual implication
Use visible endpoints or labels so the range can be inspected without judging a soft blur. A fuzzy glow may communicate atmosphere but cannot replace numeric bounds. Avoid an arrow that accelerates toward the center and locks there as though it were a guaranteed destination.
The center need not be visually centered within the band. In the sample, 12 is three days above 9 and four below 16; preserve those positions on the common scale. Do not force symmetry for visual balance. If the supplied interval changes between scenarios, show the scenario labels and retain comparable axes.
Review qualification and final precision
Read the source interpretation and the film’s concluding line side by side. A conclusion such as “Plan around the supplied range” may be appropriate creative wording; a statistical explanation requires expert approval. Keep method detail in supporting material when it cannot be read on screen, while preserving the qualification needed to interpret the chart.
Inspect the encoded final frame for bounds, units and decimal precision. If the source rounds to whole days, do not add decimal ticks merely to make the graphic look technical. Ask a reviewer what they believe is guaranteed. Correct any certainty the layout introduced and record the approved interpretation in the handoff.
Review checklist
- The interval type and interpretation are supplied.
- The estimate and range are visible together.
- The band preserves actual endpoint positions.
- No probability or guarantee is invented.
