Who this is for: Motion designers, content producers and creative reviewers.
What to prepare
- Start and end foreground/background colors
- Transition timing and compositing method
- Text roles and actual playback sizes
- A contrast measurement tool and decoded sample frames
Define the pairs that must remain readable
List headline, supporting label, caption and source-note colors separately. Each may sit on a different region or overlay. Record the background directly behind the text, including any gradient or moving texture. A single palette swatch cannot describe every pair in the composition.
W3C’s Contrast (Minimum) guidance describes 4.5:1 for ordinary text and images of text, with a 3:1 large-text exception and other defined exceptions. Consult the criterion for the actual context rather than assuming a large export canvas makes all text large at playback. A contrast check is one part of readability and accessibility review.
Build a transition sampling worksheet
For an illustrative study, the opening uses light text on a dark background and the ending uses dark text on a light background. Both endpoints may be readable while their simultaneous crossfade produces similar middle tones. Create rows for start, quarter, midpoint, three-quarter and end, recording sampled foreground, sampled background, measured ratio and observation.
Those samples are a first diagnostic pass, not proof that every frame passes. If a problem appears near the midpoint, inspect the full surrounding interval or evaluate every rendered frame with an appropriate method. Include masks and overlays: a text panel fading out can expose a very different background underneath.
Choose a transition that protects reading
Option one keeps an opaque, approved text panel while the surrounding palette changes, then updates the panel at a separate readable moment. Option two ends the first sentence, holds a neutral composition, changes colors and reveals the next sentence. Option three changes the background first while preserving a tested text pair, then changes the text treatment separately.
For the illustrative study, choose the neutral hold because the palette change also marks a new thought. It costs a small amount of runtime but avoids asking the same sentence to remain readable through an uncertain blend. Do not add a bright flash to hide the midpoint.
Verify the actual composite
Measure the colors in the final composite, then inspect at intended playback size. Thin strokes, motion blur and compression can make a theoretically adequate pair hard to read. Record both the numeric result and the visual observation instead of substituting one for the other.
When adapting to a new background image, rerun the check rather than reusing the old ratio. If the source note sits on the brightest part of a gradient, move it to a protected panel. Keep the sampled frame references and transition decision in the handoff so future palette edits trigger the same review.
Review checklist
- Every text role has a defined background pair.
- Intermediate frames are checked, not just endpoints.
- Any neutral hold preserves the intended narrative break.
- Final composite measurements and visual observations are recorded.
